K’Lonj, tell us more about yourself! My real name is Karajlon(KAH-RAJ-LAWN) Dubose. I am a 26 year old entrepreneur from Durant,MS. I currently am a professional makeup artist with my very own cosmetic line. It consist of lipsticks, eyeshadow palettes, highlighters, eyelashes, etc.
What inspired you to begin your makeup journey? What inspired my makeup journey was honestly God. I've always wanted to have my own business so I prayed and asked Him to place me in a position to help someone. Not just helping, I wanted to help empower women and make them feel more confident about themselves, then boom He said "Honey, this is what I want you to do." I haven't looked back since.
What inspired you to begin your business journey? What inspired me to become a business owner was the fear of not being able to provide for my kid the way I've always dreamed of doing. I was in my third year of college when I became pregnant. The moment I found out that I was pregnant, I immediately started to alter my life to prepare for motherhood. I used my refund for two things: 1. Put in a saving account for my son's college and 2. invested in my business. I was miles away from home and didn't want to depend on anyone else. I asked God to guide me through the process and that He did do.
From an outside perspective, people often think that running a business is easy and you make a lot of money. However, that’s not always the case. Explain any hardships and the process that you have faced in your business that got you to where you are now.One thing I've learned with being in this business is YOU CAN NOT GIVE UP. I remember a time I had two events scheduled back to back. I was just getting my brand off the ground and things were very hard. I had to do makeup out of town and the next day, I had a photoshoot for my brand. My mind was so jumbled because I was doing everything on my own. I made it back home to prepare for the photoshoot and as soon as the photographer and the models made it, I received a call from the hotel saying I left my bag in the room. My heart dropped because I knew it was my entire makeup kit. I cried so hard and didn't know what to do. I was even told that I should give up and just go work for someone else. That one saying "GIVE UP" stuck out to me. I told myself "SUCK IT UP AND MAKE A WAY." I literally went to closest dollar store purchased makeup and made it happen. I said this to say, you will have road blocks in your way and not everyday will be an awesome day. That doesn't meant you give up. The more you put into your brand is the more you will get out of it. Push harder and harder everyday and you will reach prosperity.
In a business, the starting point is always the hardest! You’ve been in a successful and growing business for 3 years. What are some advice and things to look out for when starting a business? My biggest advice would be to STAY CONSISTENT. Nobody can promote you like you promote yourself. I have a cosmetic line so I am literally a walking billboard for my brand. I keep my makeup done to attract people who are interested. I always keep my business card and a shirt with my logo and website on it. One thing I would say to look out for are negative nancies. You will have people who will not support you and that is completely okay, but I promise they will eventually cross your path and applaud your efforts if you stick to your hustle.
What advice would you give to other women who are following in your footsteps to take a leap of faith in starting a business? My advice would be JUST DO IT. All it takes is you having faith and believing that your brand will excel. Everything else will fall into place.
What are some future goals that you have for yourself and your career?
My next goal would be to expand my business worldwide. I want to be known outside of the southern states so I'm working to get that done right now.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5-10 years?I see myself in Essence or some type of magazine or media stream about my brand.
